City of Decatur Schools

The City of Decatur is the county seat for DeKalb county, and the City maintains its own school system serving between 2,000 - 3,000 students. Decatur families have long loved the small neighborhood elementary schools, many of which were within walking distance of their students homes. Since 2004, the Decatur school system has been undergoing a major realignment, overseen by new superintendent Phyllis Edwards, Ed.D. Dr. Edwards has refocused and consolidated the elementary schools and pulled out both the youngest and oldest elementary students who have been put in schools specifically geared to their needs. The new College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center provides Georgia lottery-sponsored pre-kindergarten classes as well as a federally-funded Even Start program. In addition, in partnership with the Decatur/DeKalb YMCA, affordable child care is available at the College Heights ELEC for children from infancy to age 3. The new Glennwood Academy provides upper elementary instruction for Decatur children in the 4th and 5th grades. Primary grade students (K-3) now attend one of 3 elementary schools on the north (Clairemont), east (Winnona Park) and west (Oakhurst) sides of the city. All middle and high school students within the city are served by Renfroe Middle School and Decatur High School. Decatur High is located one block from the center of Downtown Decatur and Renfroe Middle School is about 2 blocks south of the high school.

Fulton County Public Schools

From the Fulton Schools web site:
The system serves the area of Fulton County outside the city limits of Atlanta. In addition to unincorporated areas, Fulton County Schools serve the cities of Alpharetta, College Park, East Point, Fairburn, Hapeville, Mountain Park, Palmetto, Roswell, Sandy Springs and Union City.

As the fourth largest school system in Georgia, Fulton has more than 11,000 full-time employees, including more than 6,100 teachers and other certified personnel, who work in 90 schools and 15 administrative and support buildings. During the 2006-07 school year, more than 86,600 students will attend classes in 53 elementary schools, 18 middle schools, 12 high schools, two open campus high schools, and five charter schools. Two elementary schools operate on year-round calendars.

As the Atlanta metropolitan area has grown, so has the Fulton County School System. Enrollment has grown nearly 27,000 students in the past 10 years, creating a need to quickly build and fund new schools. Since 1997, Fulton County students have benefited from the proceeds from a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). This one penny sales tax was first approved by voters in March 1997 and renewed in March 2002. Since then, SPLOST has raised more than $1.1 billion for school construction. SPLOST goes beyond bricks and mortar by funding critical items such as furniture and equipment, technology upgrades and school bus replacements.
